Palo Santo Essential Oil
It takes a large quantity of resinous wood to produce a small quantity of oil. That ratio is the whole economics of this product, and it is why genuine palo santo oil is never cheap.
How it is made
The same naturally fallen wood we cut into sticks is chipped and steam distilled. Steam passes through the wood, carries the volatile compounds with it, and the oil separates from the condensate on cooling.
Nothing is added and nothing is extracted with solvents. The yield is low, which is the honest reason the price per millilitre sits where it does.
What is in it
The dominant compound in Bursera graveolens oil is limonene, which is what gives it the citrus edge, alongside α-terpineol and menthofuran among others. The exact profile varies with the age of the wood and the length of the distillation.

It is highly concentrated. In any leave-on application it is diluted heavily, and we would rather say so plainly than sell more of it.
